Screen Test
The allure of large format … I think I have already touched on this topic back in October, so there’s no need to rehash all the sticky sentiment again. But, I also wanted to get back to in-camera effects; after 7 years of keeping on top of all the latest Photoshop tricks and techniques I am feeling the need to return to where I started 20 years ago and finishing a shot when the shutter clicks instead of after the files are downloaded and processed. Of course, no matter how artwork is made these days — whether it’s on film, pixels, canvas or a brick wall it all has to be turned in to pixels at some point to be output on screen or paper. But there are some “looks” that digital photography can only mimic, and it takes hours of work in the computer to accomplish what takes moments in camera if you have the know how (whoops! was that my own horn I just heard tooting?)
I wanted a monochromatic setting for this shoot and found a great spot but I knew that a week later it would be too green and springlike to use. The sacrifice made to shoot in that location while it was still monochromatic was borne primarily by Cecilia – it was raining and really, really cold.
* With Polaroid no longer available, and Fuji Instant Film costing a small fortune I have resorted to shooting digital test shots. Please note my one handed shooting technique. I usually charge extra for this (as well as focusing).
